It is common for parents to get tense when their child is not walking or talking even after a year. It is important to understand that some children learn things slowly and some are faster than the others. Development delay need not be the reason for this
Every child’s growth and maturity will be different. Development in children to children is different. It is impossible to say that the children will learn the skills in a particular time. Some kids will learn to talk and walk fast and some kids slowly. But it is depended on so many factors that when the children will learn what skills. For example, premature birth, some sort of problems to mother in pregnancy, the effect of jaundice and infections after birth, some genetic reasons, over-protectiveness towards children, twin babies are some of the reasons that affect the growth of babies.
Walking: Generally, children start walking from 11 to 16 months. It may delay in somebody. 18 months children can be doing things like walking and pulling the items, throwing the items, turning the pages of the book, writing on floor and walls with crayons and pencils, running with concentrating on earth, etc. Two-year kids will be opening the doors, pulling draws, walking on steps, etc. Each baby will be showing different skills in different phases.
Talking: More than 15 months kids will be babbling, making various sounds, recite one or two names, etc. 18 to 24 months kids will talk 15-20 words and also responds to parent’s suggestions.
If the kids are not at all talking and not responding to the sounds around, then it will be considered to have a gross development delay.
But if the child is making some sounds and standing with the support of some things, although a bit late, it cannot be considered as a development delay. But it is important to closely observe such children. Because if there is a problem, that can be treated with an early intervention program.
